Several years ago I received a birthday gift that proudly hangs from the ceiling in my office. It is a hand carved wooden sign. Carefully etched out in this slab of wood is a dolphin, an island with a palm tree, seagulls and the words “Erin’s Landing”. This beach scene is very appropriate for a San Diego resident, but it was the words that really struck me. In fact, when you walk into our youth room you will notice a large wooden sign on the front wall with the words “The Landing”. Our youth room has also taken on the same beach ambiance as my sign, minus the dolphin.
To us the phrase “The Landing” is a great description for our ministry. It represents a place where people can come to relax, refresh and renew in preparation for heading back ‘out to sea’. In the gospel of Matthew Jesus says these words: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” He is inviting us into his presence for rest and a time of renewal. But that is not our final destination. At the conclusion of Matthew Jesus says these words: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.“
